College Seniors Need a LinkedIn Profile Now

November 28, 2008 - 11:05 pm No Comments

If you’re a College senior, you’ll be a jobseeker soon.

Get a recruiter

Get a recruiter’s attention with a professional LinkedIn profile to land your first post-college job

Students traditionally use on-campus job interviews as a way to get their first post-college job, but less than 1/3 of College students find jobs from companies that hire through career services.  On-campus interviews shouldn’t be ignored–even if you don’t land a job through them, they’re great practice.  It’s just that they aren’t the guaranteed way you’ll go from student to employee.

So what’s a bright, enthusiastic, newly educated wannabe wage-earner to do?

Use social media.  Recruiters are using connections through Twitter and Facebook to find candidates.  That’s one way.  But more specifically, get a LinkedIn profile.  LinkedIn is currently the biggest, most popular professional online network.  By creating a good profile and joining the right groups and discussions, you set yourself up to be found by recruiters in your desired industry.  Recruiters use LinkedIn all the time to find candidates.  Read up on how to create a great LinkedIn profile (or get professional help).  It’s an online resume for you.  Using the right keywords for your industry, and posting a professional photo and profile that highlights your accomplishments and relevant coursework, will help to get you noticed.  And do it now, so you can be networking and getting your name out there early–before the last day of school.

For instance, if you’re interested in getting into medical sales, laboratory sales, medical device sales, biotechnology sales, pharmaceutical sales, or other healthcare sales, I want to know about your life science degree (in biology, chemistry, zoology, etc.), your business classes, your internships, your part-time sales jobs, and more.  I’m looking for great candidates all the time.  For me, LinkedIn is one more place to mine for candidates.  You’d be crazy not to be where I can find you.

Gas Price Issue on Global Trade Deal

November 28, 2008 - 1:26 pm No Comments

Iran, India, and Pakistan recently agreed to delegate experts who would assume the task of resolving the price issue that has been affecting the global trade deal on gas planned by the three countries. According to resources, the huge pipeline project would transport natural gas from Iran to India with a distance of more than 2,500 km. If negotiations would go well, the project could start in 2007. Although the global trade deal was aimed for the benefit of the three parties, both Pakistan and India could not still agree with Iran as regards the price of gas supplies. The three nations, then, agreed to delegate independent energy experts in order to study the situation and come up with a plausible pricing solution.

Under the global trade deal, Iran wanted the gas prices to depend on the changes in the international energy markets. However, both India and Pakistan wanted the gas prices to be fixed. The huge project is reported to cost around $7 billion.

The global trade deal was first proposed ten years ago. But negotiations have stalled due to disagreements in terms of pricing. That was why the three countries decided to appoint special officials in order to settle the issue. The energy experts, who have not yet been selected until now, have the duty to come up with an effective solution during the next 4 to 5 weeks.

The three parties would then resume their discussions on the global trade deal, basing it on the new pricing formula. What is not clear though is whether the decision of the consultants will bind the three countries together. It is possible that one of them may still step out of the deal.

M. S. Srinivasan, India’s Petroleum Secretary said that there was still a disagreement between the two sides as regards gas prices. He added that all the three countries needed to be flexible in order to push through with the global trade deal on gas. Mr. Srinivasan though said that all the three sides remained bullish. While Iran said that it could trade its gas supplies elsewhere, both India and Pakistan responded by saying that they could also seek for other foreign suppliers.

If the global trade deal on gas materialized, India would be able to purchase up to 60 million cubic meters per day while Pakistan could buy as much as 30 million. The energy demand of both India and Pakistan are expected to increase by 50% in the succeeding years. The pipeline project would also be very advantageous for Pakistan since the nation could gain millions of dollars from transit fees. It must be noted that last May, negotiations among the three countries stalled due to the disagreement on gas. But if the issue would be resolved, the construction could begin next year while the operations could start in 2011. Previously, the United States had rejected the proposed global trade deal due to the strategic and financial benefits it would give Iran. However during his visit to Pakistan last March, President George W. Bush showed signs that the US had already dropped its opposition to the project.

Your marriage is over. After giving yourself time to heal and to recover, it is time to move on and resume dating. But, what is the best way to go about it? There are different methods for different situations, and no one thing will work universally, but there are some general tips.

If there are children involved, make sure that they are okay with the whole divorce situation before changing anything else. Be aware that dating is a learning process, so proceed with caution before introducing dates to your children. Do not allow an ever changing parade of faces to come and go from your children’s lives. They have had enough upheaval already. Wait until  you yourself have gotten a bit more serious with someone before bringing the kids into it. On the other hand, do not ever hide the fact that you have children.

A divorce does more than change the family dynamic. Your relationship with friends will have changed as well. Though they will all deny it, your friends have all drawn battle lines before, during and after the marriage ended. No matter who has remained friends with you, the relationship itself will have changed. Maybe that single friend you have always admired can be something more now that you are single too. Feel uncomfortable with that idea? Then maybe he has other single friends he can introduce you to.

Questioning yourself and your attractiveness is normal after a divorce. Your husband no longer wants you after all, and you might allow yourself to think that no one else will either. Part of the healing process is knowing that your work as a human is not judged by the state of your marriage or the opinion of one man. Things did not work out with a single individual, not the whole gender.

The hardest part of dating after divorce, or of dating in general for that matter, is the first date. One you have made it through that very first date without a lot of emotional scars, the you will know you are on the road to recovery.

Sign up for a class at the community college and get out there meeting people. Before you know it, you will have a whole new circle of friends and potential dates. Get out there and start living your life again. Even if you do have children, you deserve some adult time with adult people. Get a new hair cut or a cute new outfit to signal your rebirth back into the world. Smile as much as you can, even if you have to fake it at first. Soon, those fake smiles will turn into the real thing and you will catch the eye of a nice man. Take it slowly, and realize that dating, especially after a divorce is about learning and growing. There will be failures. You might get your heart bruised, maybe even broken a time or two before you get it right. But one lesson that your divorce should have taught you is this: you are far stronger than you ever thought possible and you will get through this too, better, stronger and wiser on the other side.

Entry Level Jobs – How to Find in the United States

November 27, 2008 - 4:42 am No Comments

Because of the current US economy, many American companies are laying off workers. But also, it is a fact that many companies prefer to hire recent college graduates. Our research has shown that job availability for the recent college grad may not be exactly the doom and gloom that the mainstream media has presented. Lets take a look at what you need to do in order to find an entry level job.

1) You need to make sure you are in the proper mind set for finding an entry level job. You must realize that the old cliché of “finding a job is a full time job” is true, and be prepared to be focused and persistent in your job search. Our research has shown that the jobs are there, and you will find the right fit if you are persistent. But it is also very important that you contact the right potential employer.

2) Although by definition, entry level means that you do not need work experience, this is far from the truth. You absolutely need to have some work experience if you want to obtain an entry level position. It is desirable that you have some experience in the field you are trying to enter. But how can you gain experience if you can not enter the field in the first place.

3) During your college years, and even your high school years, in preparation for an entry level position, you should have been gaining some work experience by doing some volunteer work in your field of interest. If you can show your potential employer that you indeed have a passion for your area of interest, you will be in a much more competitive position to gain an entry level job. So hopefully at this point, you have gained some work experience during your high school and or college years, and although it may not be much, even a small amount of work experience can be helpful.

What if you could not find volunteer work in your area of interest. You need some documentation, other then the degree you earned, that shows a potential employer that you have a passion for your area. You can write online articles, put up a website, use sites like LinkedIn, ZoomInfo or Google Profile. Facebook is probably not a good option, since Facebook is like a diary, something to be opened only by people with authorization. The point is, you need to have some online presence or documentation which displays your passion for your area of interest.

For those who do have work experience, make sure that your previous supervisor or supervisors can provide a good employment reference for you. If you have been a competent, reliable worker with a good attitude, then a previous supervisor should not have any problem in terms of providing a good employment reference.

4) The next step is to write a resume, or Curriculum Vitae, that stands out from all the others. The Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a detailed listing of your educational achievements, publications, presentations, professional activities, and honors. The Curriculum Vitae is longer than the typical resume, and may consist of two pages or more. A CV is usually necessary only if you are seeking a faculty, research, clinical or scientific position. For other positions, you can use a resume.

But whether you use a CV or a resume, it should clearly show to the potential employer some work experience which is directly or remotely related to the job you are seeking. Include both volunteer and non volunteer work on your resume or CV. You do not need to have a professional write up a resume or CV for you. Today, you can use online utilities which produce a nice looking resume or CV, and there is a lot of information online about how to write one.

In terms of the resume, a couple important points need to be made. Research shows that only one interview is granted for every 200 resumes received by the average employer. This data is for all levels of employment, not just entry level. Research also shows that your resume will be quickly scanned, rather than read. Ten to 20 seconds is all the time you have to persuade a prospective employer to read further. What does this mean? It is essential to have the most important features about you, such as your related volunteer or non-volunteer work experience, on the upper half of your resume.

5) When looking for companies to send your resume to, you need to use a list which is made up of companies which prefer to hire a large number of recent college grads. Go to 2009 Top Entry Level Employers for such a list. This list covers companies of all sizes and industries and speaks to the need for fresh talent in

So You Want To Be A Video Gaming Software Engineer Designer ?

November 27, 2008 - 1:01 am No Comments

It can be best summarized and stated that many in the computerized high tech gaming field think that writing those video games software and software routines might well be their “dream job”. Peachy keen. After all they well consider themselves video gaming aficionados. “After all I’ve got 10 Zillion points on Counterstrike”. ‘Why don’t girls like me?”
r
rThe sad truth of the matter is that the video gaming industry is multi-billion dollar cutthroat industry full of what you might well consider cut throat characters as to well what might be considered in the regular impoverished world of most computer gamers , absolute “low lives ” of the worst variety , kind and temperament. Lol, Lots of Luck when it comes to your fantasy job of computer gaming video software designer, designers and developers.
r
rIt can and might well be said that the biggest companies – those with the most marketing resources and push , as well as the deepest pockets to pay you , as a software designer and developer the highest salaries and pay bonuses can often be the hardest to get a job with. Everyone else wants to work for that well known branded company as well – with that great visibility, product as well as brand name recognition in the computer gaming field and fields. Welcome to the real world. Goodbye fantasy. Reality what a concept.
r
rStill it can be said that big companies, with the marketing will, budget and muscle for promoting their product in this competitive marketplace as always on the prowl for new talent with newer fresh innovative ideas, themes as well as product. One has to only look at the very competitive LCD / Plasma big screen TV market to note such a case. Not long ago it was Japanese Sony electronics that had the cachet and demanded a premium dollar price tag if you wished to purchase their product at your local big box high tech electronics store. Skip foreword in time and it next was Japanese manufacturers who manufactured their goods offshore from the island of the Rising Sun – such as Sharp Electronics. Currently in 2009 / 2010 the market leader in the electronics high tech Plasma / LCD TV video displays is held by many experts and commentators in the field to be samsung – a strictly Korean as opposed to East Asian or East Asian Japanese rim company organization. How time changes the most highly competitive markets and marketing plans – video game platforms, consoles as well as the software integral to the satisfaction of most video gamers and video gaming junkies as well.
r
rThus as a competent and dedicated video gamer have heart that you at your best may well be able to implement and coordinate your best efforts and influence as well as enhance and develop those very video games and scenarios that you enjoy and relish so much. First of all develop of stable of your best products that you have worked on, or if you do not have software development of marketing skills – write your scenarios and projects on paper or word processor. This is your resume, work plan and business plan so speak. Make it polished and professional in appearance and presentation. The video marketing video authority Riteway Strokon has commented again and again “Presentation”. Lastly it’s up to you to hit the pavement or the email or fax road.

Executives: Are You Worth the Investment?

November 27, 2007 - 3:53 am No Comments

Every executive must always be concerned with making a return on investment, or ROI. In business, returns need to be all but guaranteed to make an investment worth while.

Job seekers must realize that companies feel the same way when they start interviewing potential employees. Their investment in you needs to be validated by significant returns. If they don’t know this for sure, you won’t get the job. Given that, how can an executive prove to a prospective hiring company that he’s worth the money? Here are a few ideas to consider …

Look at Your Revenue

If there were quantifiable parts to your previous job, you want to make sure to put them into numbers on your executive resume that will help illustrate your success. Revenue is one crucial area–show prospects that you turned into sales, major business deals, and other revenue you’d earned for your previous employers.

For instance, you might note that you not only were able to slash hiring expenses by cutting advertising costs (advertised on free websites), but you were able to create a stellar staff that increased revenue by X amount of dollars over a year’s time. Showing numbers that correlate with the success you brought a company clearly shows your value to said company and makes you a safer hire.

How Productive Was Your Staff?

Businesses are often very concerned with productivity, as you probably are as an executive, and they look for ways to ensure that their employees are earning them as much as possible. An executive who shows how he was able to affect productivity in simple terms stands a good chance of getting a job.

For example, you can look at the amount of time it took to complete a major project that resulted in a revenue increase of 3 percent for the year. Let’s say in simple terms that you were allotted 12 weeks of 40-hour per week shifts at $10/hr for 20 workers to complete a special project. The cost of this was $96,000. Let’s say that you also invested in training resources of $500 per employee, and software updates that cost $10K but cut the project down to six weeks. Your final cost for the project is $68,000, which means you saved the company $28,000, still increased the revenue by 3 percent, and was able to increase process efficiency so that the workers could be used to enhance other projects.

Other Numbers to Think About

If your segment of the company didn’t work in terms of revenue, you can still note numbers that represent progress. For instance, if your ran the customer service department of your company, you can look at the number of customers your department was responsible for, as well as increases in customer satisfaction. Phone contact with customers can be a troublesome issue, so show how you decreased the time span of each call or helped your department handle more customers per day on the phones.

Remember, just like on your previous jobs, prospective employers want to know their potential ROI when looking at candidates. You’re used to dealing with investments and returns, so use your experience to explain clearly why you should be hired.

How To Become Employed With 9.8% Unemployment

November 27, 2006 - 10:19 pm No Comments

9.8% unemployment is the national average. For many states, it is even higher than 9.8%. I live in California and the number has hit double digits. This is true for many other states as well. Regardless of the rate, anyone actively in a job search knows these are difficult times. There is hope, and I believe opportunity, for many of those looking.

rn

We have a very active job search coaching practice. The problem with many candidates we work with is, they come to us too late. They are usually out of work for an average of 4-6 months. They then expect us to be able to help them find work quickly. Sorry, we are good, but can’t work miracles, and nobody (not even us) can get you employed.

rn

ONLY YOU CAN DO THAT.

rn

But we can help you learn from your mistakes. The biggest problem we find with candidates is that they really don’t have a targeted, very focused approach to their search. Their fear of possibly missing an opportunity is so powerful that they often don’t see the forest for the trees. Our biggest challenge is to help get the candidates focused like a laser beam on a target and then drive to that target. In many cases this is a monumental task.

rn

As the employment numbers get worse, successful candidates must become more and more focused. Companies today aren’t looking for a jack of all trades. They want the king or queen. If you aren’t targeted and highly focused, then it is difficult to land a position.

rn

You have to have a bull’s-eye on the target so you have something to aim at. What is your bull’s-eye?

rn

Here are some suggestions to help you get focused.

rnrn

  • Take a step back and think if you were a specialist at something what would it be?
  • rn

  • Write out a complete and very thorough job description. Most of the candidates we talk with can’t do this.
  • rn

  • Make sure your Linkedin and other public profiles are focused on you as a specialist. Most profiles are generic, vague and cover every possible job function within the person’s discipline.
  • rn

  • Identify a specific target list of companies, people, recruiters and service providers that can lead you to your target.
  • rn

  • Identify those connectors that can put you in touch with those in number 4.
  • rn

  • Identify three or four networking groups that align with your industry, functional expertise, career level, and become very active in those groups. Serve on or chair a committee, get on the board, take a leadership position and become well know in those groups.
  • rn

  • Consider serving on non-profit boards. These boards will not only make you feel good, but they often have great contacts and you can demonstrate your leadership skills.
  • rn

  • Build a network of 100 people that know you and your background so well that they can refer you with confidence. I use the 5 call rule. If a recruiter from 2,000 miles away is conducting a search in your geographical area  you will be referred within 5 calls.
  • rn

  • Don’t ignore your unemployed peers. They are out looking for positions 8 hours a day. The employed aren’t spending any time doing this. Who do you think is more likely to come across a position that is right for you first?
  • rn

  • Have the right networking tools to do the job. This includes a bio and networking business cards. Not a resume and business type business cards.
  • rn

  • Finally, network with a purpose. Don’t try to meet everyone on the planet. You will only get burned out networking with little to show for it. Meet only those that can advance you toward your target. Be polite and  help others when necessary but pre-screen people before spending time with them.
  • rn

  • Use Linkedin to find people and the connectors you need. This is why it is so critical to build your contacts beyond 500.
  • rnrn

I don’t mean to imply that doing these things will guarantee you find a position right away. I do believe if you don’t do them you will be in-transition a lot longer than if you do. Having a general, shot gun approach will definitely extend your job search.

    rn

Be sure and join our Linkedin Job Search Networking group. This is important. CLICK HERE to join.

Kidney Failure in Dogs – What You Should Know About Kidney Failure in Dogs

    November 27, 2005 - 4:47 am No Comments

Kidney failure in dogs can be a devastating experience both for you and your furry friends. The thought of possibly losing your beloved pet is enough to make you frustrated and depressed. But how can you find out if your dog has a failing kidney, and what are the ways of treating this chronic illness?
    r
    rSymptoms
    r
rKidney failure is a common disease not only in dogs, but in cats as well. It mostly occurs in aging animals. Early signs may be an increase in water consumption, and an increase in urine production. However, most animals don’t show these symptoms – not until 70% to 75% of their kidney function has failed. For more advanced kidney problems, your dog may show loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, ulcers in the mouth, and a very bad breath.
    r
    rTreatments of Dog Kidney Problems
    r
rFor pet owners, kidney failure in dogs is a serious condition. With the proper treatment and care, you can help your dog lengthen its life for a longer time.
    r
rDogs’ kidneys may also be ‘restarted’ through intravenous fluids to flush out the kidneys. Diuresis, as this process is called, may help to make the kidney cells function once more. If there would be enough kidney cells to function, they can help waste removal from the body again. Electrolytes, dextrose and potassium may also help. Proper nutrition and high-quality food are used during dieresis to control diarrhea and vomiting.
    r
rDiuresis may resume kidney functions for a few weeks to a few years, or they may function again, but fail as soon as the treatment ceases. There’s also the possibility of kidney functions not returning anymore.
    r
rAnimals with kidney problems usually undergo a low-protein, low-sodium and low-phosphorus diet. This diet reduces mineral deposits in the kidneys, and generates less nitrogenous excesses, which can cause vomiting at high levels. Low-protein diets mean a decrease of workload on the kidneys. In addition, phosphorus is filtered out of the body through the kidneys, so a low-phosphorus diet can help a lot. A high level of phosphorus in the body leads to poor appetite, so certain medications which help bind phosphates inside the intestines can also help your dog.
    r
rFluids should be continuously given subcutaneously (under the skin.) This process helps the kidney to restart itself, and should be done once a day or once a week. The frequency depends on the degree of the kidney failure.
    r
rMake use of medicines and drugs to stimulate the bone marrow so that it would give out new red blood cells to your dog’s body. Since the kidneys manufacture erythropoietin, that hormone stimulates the production of red blood cells through the bone marrow. Most dogs with kidney failure have anemia because this hormone isn’t being produced by the kidney, thereby it cannot stimulate the bone marrow, as well. There are some artificial or synthetic forms of erythropoietin which may mimic the real hormone to help produce red blood cells. However, some dogs may consider this synthetic hormone as a foreign body and make antibodies to battle it.

    Resume tips for freshers

    November 27, 2005 - 1:40 am No Comments

Resume is a French word that means “summary”. A resume gives a brief account of one’s education, employment & other skills, used in applying for a job position. If you are a fresher looking for a job, it is important for you to look good on paper.

Here are a few tips that can help you make a good resume:

  • The Format:
  • There is no one correct resume format for making a resume. A resume is a way to showcase your profile in your unique style. Just highlight what you think makes an impressive statement.

  • Write The Basics:
  • Objective – To attract the employer, in about 2-3 lines to highlight your focus in life, amalgamated with your skills and job requirement.

Contact Info – Make sure that you put relevant, current and correct contact information. It will come handy for the employer.

Education – Mention your degrees and the credentials, in a complete fashion. Also, don’t forget, to specify any certifications undertaken for that extra edge.

Experience – If you have any internship or any other kind of  employment experience, include it in your resume.

Skill-Set – List all the buzz words that describe your potential best.

  • Attract with Specifics:
  • If you are a multi-talented person and if you are seeking vacancies”>vacancies in different sectors, you must amend your resume suiting the needs of that particular job.

Stress on the areas of your expertise and strength in that field to appear the most deserving of that spot.

  • Mention Important Pointers:
  • One very interesting thing to mention in your resume is the Volunteer Professional activities. These pointers not only showcase your leadership, commitment and abilities but, also diversify your interest and skill set.

  • Advertise yourself in your resume:
  • Don’t sell yourself but advertise yourself. You must have read it millions of time. But, it truly leaves an impact on the employer. Mention all your valuable assets, even if they don’t seem to fit for a particular job.

  • Reverse writing:
  • Always list your qualifications and experiences or anything that has a chronology, in a reverse order. In other words, place everything in order of relevance, from most to least and current to previous.

  • Formatting Matters:
  • Use of suitable fonts (Times New Roman, Arial etc.), margins (1.5 inches preferably) and indentation is a key to a good resume. Avoid making a fancy sheet overloaded with creativity.

Other than that, always make your resume in a .doc (Word Document) with a size within 100Kb or maximum 2 pages with a decent file name.

  • Proof read it afterwards:
  • Apart from essential spell-check, grammatical anomalies and punctuations, make sure that you get your resume proofread by people attentive to details. Do consider their valuable critiques.
