College Seniors Need a LinkedIn Profile Now

November 28, 2008 - 11:05 pm No Comments

If you’re a college senior, you’ll be a jobseeker soon.

Get a recruiter

Get a recruiter’s attention with a professional LinkedIn profile to land your first post-college job

Students traditionally use on-campus job interviews as a way to get their first post-college job, but less than 1/3 of college students find jobs from companies that hire through career services.  On-campus interviews shouldn’t be ignored–even if you don’t land a job through them, they’re great practice.  It’s just that they aren’t the guaranteed way you’ll go from student to employee.

So what’s a bright, enthusiastic, newly educated wannabe wage-earner to do?

Use social media.  Recruiters are using connections through Twitter and Facebook to find candidates.  That’s one way.  But more specifically, get a LinkedIn profile.  LinkedIn is currently the biggest, most popular professional online network.  By creating a good profile and joining the right groups and discussions, you set yourself up to be found by recruiters in your desired industry.  Recruiters use LinkedIn all the time to find candidates.  Read up on how to create a great LinkedIn profile (or get professional help).  It’s an online resume for you.  Using the right keywords for your industry, and posting a professional photo and profile that highlights your accomplishments and relevant coursework, will help to get you noticed.  And do it now, so you can be networking and getting your name out there early–before the last day of school.

For instance, if you’re interested in getting into medical sales, laboratory sales, medical device sales, biotechnology sales, pharmaceutical sales, or other healthcare sales, I want to know about your life science degree (in biology, chemistry, zoology, etc.), your business classes, your internships, your part-time sales jobs, and more.  I’m looking for great candidates all the time.  For me, LinkedIn is one more place to mine for candidates.  You’d be crazy not to be where I can find you.

Gas Price Issue on Global Trade Deal

November 28, 2008 - 1:26 pm No Comments

Iran, India, and Pakistan recently agreed to delegate experts who would assume the task of resolving the price issue that has been affecting the global trade deal on gas planned by the three countries. According to resources, the huge pipeline project would transport natural gas from Iran to India with a distance of more than 2,500 km. If negotiations would go well, the project could start in 2007. Although the global trade deal was aimed for the benefit of the three parties, both Pakistan and India could not still agree with Iran as regards the price of gas supplies. The three nations, then, agreed to delegate independent energy experts in order to study the situation and come up with a plausible pricing solution.

Under the global trade deal, Iran wanted the gas prices to depend on the changes in the international energy markets. However, both India and Pakistan wanted the gas prices to be fixed. The huge project is reported to cost around $7 billion.

The global trade deal was first proposed ten years ago. But negotiations have stalled due to disagreements in terms of pricing. That was why the three countries decided to appoint special officials in order to settle the issue. The energy experts, who have not yet been selected until now, have the duty to come up with an effective solution during the next 4 to 5 weeks.

The three parties would then resume their discussions on the global trade deal, basing it on the new pricing formula. What is not clear though is whether the decision of the consultants will bind the three countries together. It is possible that one of them may still step out of the deal.

M. S. Srinivasan, India’s Petroleum Secretary said that there was still a disagreement between the two sides as regards gas prices. He added that all the three countries needed to be flexible in order to push through with the global trade deal on gas. Mr. Srinivasan though said that all the three sides remained bullish. While Iran said that it could trade its gas supplies elsewhere, both India and Pakistan responded by saying that they could also seek for other foreign suppliers.

If the global trade deal on gas materialized, India would be able to purchase up to 60 million cubic meters per day while Pakistan could buy as much as 30 million. The energy demand of both India and Pakistan are expected to increase by 50% in the succeeding years. The pipeline project would also be very advantageous for Pakistan since the nation could gain millions of dollars from transit fees. It must be noted that last May, negotiations among the three countries stalled due to the disagreement on gas. But if the issue would be resolved, the construction could begin next year while the operations could start in 2011. Previously, the United States had rejected the proposed global trade deal due to the strategic and financial benefits it would give Iran. However during his visit to Pakistan last March, President George W. Bush showed signs that the US had already dropped its opposition to the project.

Your marriage is over. After giving yourself time to heal and to recover, it is time to move on and resume dating. But, what is the best way to go about it? There are different methods for different situations, and no one thing will work universally, but there are some general tips.

If there are children involved, make sure that they are okay with the whole divorce situation before changing anything else. Be aware that dating is a learning process, so proceed with caution before introducing dates to your children. Do not allow an ever changing parade of faces to come and go from your children’s lives. They have had enough upheaval already. Wait until  you yourself have gotten a bit more serious with someone before bringing the kids into it. On the other hand, do not ever hide the fact that you have children.

A divorce does more than change the family dynamic. Your relationship with friends will have changed as well. Though they will all deny it, your friends have all drawn battle lines before, during and after the marriage ended. No matter who has remained friends with you, the relationship itself will have changed. Maybe that single friend you have always admired can be something more now that you are single too. Feel uncomfortable with that idea? Then maybe he has other single friends he can introduce you to.

Questioning yourself and your attractiveness is normal after a divorce. Your husband no longer wants you after all, and you might allow yourself to think that no one else will either. Part of the healing process is knowing that your work as a human is not judged by the state of your marriage or the opinion of one man. Things did not work out with a single individual, not the whole gender.

The hardest part of dating after divorce, or of dating in general for that matter, is the first date. One you have made it through that very first date without a lot of emotional scars, the you will know you are on the road to recovery.

But one lesson that your divorce should have taught you is this: you are far stronger than you ever thought possible and you will get through this too, better, stronger and wiser on the other side.

Entry Level Jobs – How to Find in the United States

November 27, 2008 - 4:42 am No Comments

Because of the current US economy, many American companies are laying off workers. But also, it is a fact that many companies prefer to hire recent college graduates. Our research has shown that job availability for the recent college grad may not be exactly the doom and gloom that the mainstream media has presented. Lets take a look at what you need to do in order to find an entry level job.

1) You need to make sure you are in the proper mind set for finding an entry level job. You must realize that the old cliché of “finding a job is a full time job” is true, and be prepared to be focused and persistent in your job search. Our research has shown that the jobs are there, and you will find the right fit if you are persistent. But it is also very important that you contact the right potential employer.

2) Although by definition, entry level means that you do not need work experience, this is far from the truth. You absolutely need to have some work experience if you want to obtain an entry level position. It is desirable that you have some experience in the field you are trying to enter. But how can you gain experience if you can not enter the field in the first place.

3) During your college years, and even your high school years, in preparation for an entry level position, you should have been gaining some work experience by doing some volunteer work in your field of interest. If you can show your potential employer that you indeed have a passion for your area of interest, you will be in a much more competitive position to gain an entry level job. So hopefully at this point, you have gained some work experience during your high school and or college years, and although it may not be much, even a small amount of work experience can be helpful.

What if you could not find volunteer work in your area of interest. You need some documentation, other then the degree you earned, that shows a potential employer that you have a passion for your area. You can write online articles, put up a website, use sites like LinkedIn, ZoomInfo or Google Profile. Facebook is probably not a good option, since Facebook is like a diary, something to be opened only by people with authorization. The point is, you need to have some online presence or documentation which displays your passion for your area of interest.

For those who do have work experience, make sure that your previous supervisor or supervisors can provide a good employment reference for you. If you have been a competent, reliable worker with a good attitude, then a previous supervisor should not have any problem in terms of providing a good employment reference.

4) The next step is to write a resume, or Curriculum Vitae, that stands out from all the others. The Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a detailed listing of your educational achievements, publications, presentations, professional activities, and honors. The Curriculum Vitae is longer than the typical resume, and may consist of two pages or more. A CV is usually necessary only if you are seeking a faculty, research, clinical or scientific position. For other positions, you can use a resume.

But whether you use a CV or a resume, it should clearly show to the potential employer some work experience which is directly or remotely related to the job you are seeking. Include both volunteer and non volunteer work on your resume or CV. You do not need to have a professional write up a resume or CV for you. Today, you can use online utilities which produce a nice looking resume or CV, and there is a lot of information online about how to write one.

In terms of the resume, a couple important points need to be made. Research shows that only one interview is granted for every 200 resumes received by the average employer. This data is for all levels of employment, not just entry level. Research also shows that your resume will be quickly scanned, rather than read. Ten to 20 seconds is all the time you have to persuade a prospective employer to read further. What does this mean? It is essential to have the most important features about you, such as your related volunteer or non-volunteer work experience, on the upper half of your resume.

5) When looking for companies to send your resume to, you need to use a list which is made up of companies which prefer to hire a large number of recent college grads. Go to 2009 Top Entry Level Employers for such a list. This list covers companies of all sizes and industries and speaks to the need for fresh talent in

So You Want To Be A Video Gaming Software Engineer Designer ?

November 27, 2008 - 1:01 am No Comments

It can be best summarized and stated that many in the computerized high tech gaming field think that writing those video games software and software routines might well be their “dream job”. Peachy keen. After all they well consider themselves video gaming aficionados. “After all I’ve got 10 Zillion points on Counterstrike”. ‘Why don’t girls like me?”
r
rThe sad truth of the matter is that the video gaming industry is multi-billion dollar cutthroat industry full of what you might well consider cut throat characters as to well what might be considered in the regular impoverished world of most computer gamers , absolute “low lives ” of the worst variety , kind and temperament. Lol, Lots of Luck when it comes to your fantasy job of computer gaming video software designer, designers and developers.
r
rIt can and might well be said that the biggest companies – those with the most marketing resources and push , as well as the deepest pockets to pay you , as a software designer and developer the highest salaries and pay bonuses can often be the hardest to get a job with. Everyone else wants to work for that well known branded company as well – with that great visibility, product as well as brand name recognition in the computer gaming field and fields. Welcome to the real world. Goodbye fantasy. Reality what a concept.
r
rStill it can be said that big companies, with the marketing will, budget and muscle for promoting their product in this competitive marketplace as always on the prowl for new talent with newer fresh innovative ideas, themes as well as product. One has to only look at the very competitive LCD / Plasma big screen TV market to note such a case. Not long ago it was Japanese Sony electronics that had the cachet and demanded a premium dollar price tag if you wished to purchase their product at your local big box high tech electronics store. Skip foreword in time and it next was Japanese manufacturers who manufactured their goods offshore from the island of the Rising Sun – such as Sharp Electronics. Currently in 2009 / 2010 the market leader in the electronics high tech Plasma / LCD TV video displays is held by many experts and commentators in the field to be Samsung – a strictly Korean as opposed to East Asian or East Asian Japanese rim company organization.
